Cooperstown is named for William Cooper who moved there in 1790 …one of his thirteen children was James Fenimore Cooper one of our country’s greatest novelists and the father of American frontier literature.
One of the premier features of The Otesaga is its par 72 Leatherstocking Golf Course. Designed in 1909 by Devereux Emmet, it is considered by many to be one of the East’s most scenic and challenging resort golf courses.

In addition to the quality of play on the Leatherstocking course it has been hailed for its commitment to high environmental standards and to preservation of wildlife habitat. International officially designated Leatherstocking a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary,” under its Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System (ACSS), a program supported by the United States Golf Association.

The name Leatherstocking…in this era of few “readers” …comes from the Leatherstocking Tales, a series of novels by American writer James Fenimore Cooper. They feature the hero Natty Bumppo, known as “Leatherstocking,” Other name references from the Tales are …The Pathfinder” …”the trapper” …and by the Native Americans as “Deerslayer” …”La Longue Carabine” …and “Hawkeye”.
